When Patents Attack! | This American Life →
If you work in the tech industry, you must listen to this … if you don’t, you should still listen. This is a fantastic overview of why our patent system is screwed up when it comes to software. Any lawyers or lawmakers out there that want to start a movement to eliminate software patents???

Googlies →
So, I wanted to learn a little bit about HTML5 and how the canvas element worked. I ended up making googly eyes! Check them out. They are all the rage. So far, there is already one page on the internet using them. Tomorrow, there may still be one…but they will still be all of the rage. If you want to help make them better, I posted the code here: ...

"Get Info" from the command line
I have been trying to figure out how to get at the metadata for a PDF file from the command line.  I just want the basic information that is present when you run “Get Info” on the file.  It seems to be accessible via applescript and automater, but that wasn’t what I wanted.  Alas, our friend mdls to the rescue: @Desktop $ mdls ViewControllerPGforiPhoneOS.pdf kMDItemAuthors ...

Next Steps
If anyone knows of a great opportunity for which you think I may be a good match, I would love to know. I am not looking for just a job, but for a great fit. I am not sure exactly what this looks like, but I know it will present some combination of the following: a consistent challenge a top notch team an opportunity to mentor an opportunity to be mentored a focus on sound design a team...

Documentation - Facebook Developers →
Is it just me, or does the Facebook documentation suck? Not just a little inconvenient, but very inconsistent and lacking any detail.  This is completely unacceptable for a multi-billion dollar company.  I would love to see some high level architectural diagrams of integration points, comments on older APIs and what you should use instead.  I particularly like that the wiki which seems to have...

Replacement iPad
So I have had nothing but issues with my iPad since I got it. So much for being an early adopter. Nearly all of the issues were wifi related, and I just assumed that since I read others were having wifi issues that a fix would come. Finally I got fed up and called apple care. Turns out that ipads with serial numbers beginning with GB011 and earlier were prone to these errors. Of course mine was in...

iPad update: yes it is a big iPod touch, but don’t let that fool you. Totally a new experience. You can actually be productive, watch movies, read, surf the web. Once you hold it, you will need one.

Why I like NPR
As I was driving to work this morning…yes all of 7 minutes…it dawned on me why I liked listening to NPR.  NPR is calm.  The hosts don’t yell, they don’t try to make you fearful, they don’t try to coax you into listening with violence or sex or whatever.  They don’t report just bad news or scandals.  In fact, I can’t recall the last time I heard any...

Great tip if you want to move messages from the keyboard and are too cheap to buy Mail Act-On (which is a fine product…just can’t justify it for a couple of shortcuts.) For the whole tip, go here: http://www.macosxhints.com/article.php?story=20091115042357395

AT&T: A Necessary Evil?
I have never liked AT&T.  I will admit that.  My cell phone service is spotty, my business line phone service seems to go up in price on a monthly basis, and if I ever make changes to my account (home or business), I can be assured that it will be screwed up for at least 3 billing cycles, requiring me to call, sit on hold, and try to get things the way they should be.  Why can’t AT&T...

iPhone, Mac & Google Syncing
So I spent some time today, (probably way too much), trying to figure out how to better sync with Google, the iPhone and my Macs. Here are my conclusions. (This is all from memory, so sorry if the specifics are not absolute, they should be close.) My Setup iPhone (w/3.1.2) MacBook (w/10.6.2) iMac (w/10.6.2) gMail Account (4 different addresses which all get funneled through the one gMail...

Date Received in Mail.app
So after much experimenting, I have come to a conclusion about where the “Date Received” field comes from in Apple’s Mail.app. My ‘hunch’ is that it is a cached value that it has for a message if that is available. If that is not available, it will use the earlier of the time of connection with IMAP or the INTERNAL DATE on the message provided by IMAP. Now for...
